Scouting

Went around the area looking for preschool for whoelse..
Found the PASTI and CIC that i was researching.. As expected. Not too appealing.
Danish was getting agitated, cos he realized what we were doing. Many tsk..tsk.. and i'm sleepy, nak balik stuff.. The thing is, since the preschool is house-based, they look so much like his last nursery. I got so worried.. I know that once he is started, hopefully it will crash all his previous thoughts.. We got to get it right this time. Last time was a mistake, which i don't want to repeat. When it comes to kids, only their papas and mamas have good interests.

Rain..

Today, Danish spoke about how rain is formed.. SOmething like this:
"Mama, the cloud is black sebab ada air dlm dia. Pastu, air keluar dr bawah dia, jadi hujan." Must be from some tv programmes he's been watching. ALhamdulillah, the fact that he can learn something.
We went to the library today. It would be a weekly activity InsyaAllah.

I want to find a cassette on Ayat2 Lazim, so that i can play it when we are driving to Tesco or sth. I hope that Allah will help him in memorising surahs in the Quran. InsyaAllah.

Short span

Attention span is short for a 4 year old. And the house is not conducive place to learn. I should know that, all my life i sat in libraries to study. Besides, he's too used to watching tv at home. Tv itself is not such a bad influence for him. PHDC has taught him a lot.. repeating the same story over and over helps him learn more.

Yesterday, i tried to teach him a bit from the new book. Not really teaching, was more of indirect teaching. WHich kind of work in a way.. he learnt 4 words.. Today, more of reinforcing the words to him.. and later adding more words.

High Frequency Words

Got a book for Danish at Po*pular bookstore. I got intimidated by the preschoolers' books there. It says on the book that it's for 4-6 year olds. Wokey.. I don't think it would be easy, but children amaze you beyond your wildest dreams. So we took the challenge. Besides, all this while we've been buying puzzles, number flashcards that he couldn't do by himself, but he can now.. It shows when they get exposed they can. We bought "High Frequency Words". Comes with flash cards. Very organized way of teaching. And something that i thought should be a good start for him.

Last night we tried to teach him with the new book, difficult. The TV was on, adik is around, papa's around.Too may distractions.. He didn't want to learn.. It just goes to show that when he's not into it, nothing you can do. At this particular time, i thought yeah, schools would be good for him. Another thing, he likes to say "I can't do it", when i say "you can!" He says "I can't!" (I really wanted to laugh but i had to tackle this problem first).Of course you can .. InsyaAllah.

He loves books, but he likes us to read for him. Except for the Colours in the Jungle book that he memorized, he loves listening to them. We are trying as much as we can to help him spell the easy words now.. Just to get him to know the normal sound for the alphabet.

Tips melayan anak

15....Hargailah permainan kesayangan anak anda . Mereka juga dalam masa yang sama akan menghargai barang-barang kesayangan anda. Elakkan daripada membuang barang kesayangan mereka walaupun sudah rosak. Mintalah kebenaran mereka sebelum berbuat demikian.

16. Janganlah membiarkan anak-anak anda tidur tanpa ciuman selamat malam,

17. Terimalah yang kadangkala anda bukanlah ibubapa yang sempurna . Ini akan mengurangkan stress menjadi ibu bapa.

20. Anak-anak juga mempunyai perasaan seperti anda .

How to make spelling easy for your kids

Simple Kids' Activities with Short Vowel Words
Nov 6, 2008 Kalyani Candade

The most effective tool to good spelling is an amazingly simple one: "Open your mouth and say the word".

English spelling is actually not difficult, once the logic is clear. While many spellings are phonetic and are spelt as they are spoken, the confusion arises from groups of words that are drawn from different European languages. Here are some simple exercises you can do with your child to create strong fundamentals.

Make your Child Say the Word Aloud
This is the golden key that can unlock the secrets of the English alphabet. Say the words aloud with your child, play with the sounds of the alphabets, show him or her how the shape of the mouth correlates with the sound made.

Start with the Vowels, the Triangular "A"
Identify about five words with a similar "A" sound and make her repeat the words, for example: Hay, May, Gay, Day, Way. Let her get familiar with the sound of "A". Demonstrate the triangular shape the mouth makes when you say the "A". Experiment with the changing sounds when the shape of the mouth changes. Move slowly into a long "aah", and start making a list of words with that sound; like Car, Bar, Mar, Par, Far. Play around with the many different sounds of "A". You could act, or mime, if you feel like it. Have fun!

Move on to the Circular "O"
After a while, turn the "A"’ into a slow "aaaoooo’"and then make a full "O". Talk about how the mouth makes a complete circle. Move to "O" words. For your examples, use short "O" words like Hot, Got, Dot, Pot, Rot.

Smile your Way into a Wide "E"
When you’re finished with "O", stretch your mouth into a wide smile, and move into an "eeee". Point out the shape of the mouth and the correlation with the sound. Use words with a double "E" for your examples: Feet, Meet, Sweet, Greet, Beet.

Then, slowly, mouth still open in a smile, shorten the 'ee' sound to an ‘eh’. Move to words like Pet, Bet, Red, Ten, Pen. Discuss how the shape of the mouth stays the same, but the sound is shortened.

Experiment with the Shape of "I"
After "E", it’s time to move into the slightly less defined "I". Continue the exercise. Discover, along with your child, how the shape of the mouth changes to make the various "I".sounds. For your examples, use words making the short "I". sound; Bit, Kit, Hit, Pit, Lit. Highlight the plosive "I".; play around with the short, expulsive sound and maybe create simple mimes around it.

Discover the fun of the Pursed "U"
Introduce the "Ooh" sound dramatically. Make a long, drawn out sound complete with pursed mouth, and make your child do the same. Repeat it a couple of times for effect and fun. Then create your words; use the long "ue" words to demonstrate the sound of "U"; Blue, True, Glue, Cue, Hue. Explain that "U" often likes to have another vowel along for company. Do not tackle the odd "U" words like "but" and "put" at this stage.

Repeat the Activity and Make it a Game
At the end of this exercise, your child should have a fair understanding of the standard sounds of the vowels, and should begin to enjoy vocalizing the sounds and understanding how they work. It is important that the word groups that you choose should be standard and easy to follow; do not introduce odd spellings or exceptions right now. Repeat this a couple of times, always taking care to choose a simple and predictable set of words. Catch the odd moment, throw it around, surprise each other. Once your child starts enjoying the game, it’s time to move on to activities with vowel combinations like the long "ee" diagraph , the long "a" sound and the long "o" diagraph.

Anxiety

When it comes to sending Danish to school, i'm just as anxious as him. I think Papa doesn't understand this as much. I sent him to nursery everyday last year. I can feel his agony of being sent away. Is it because of my own experience as a child? I hated being sent from one place to another, it was ever changing. Why couldn't i just stay at my own house? My mom worked at the time. Of course we got sent away. But i'm a sahm.. so why should my kids get sent away?

I get it that Danish should go to preschool before he enters the real school. I went to preschool myself, at 6 years of age. During our time, u don't even have to go to tadika. Teachers teach u how to read in Standard 1. I heard they don't do this these days, cos they assumed every kid has gone to tadika. Ni pun i have fear jugak. But Danish knows the alphabet since he was 2. InsyaAllah he'll be able to read by the time he's 6. I'm not trying to make him a genius since he's 4. I want him to be able to enjoy his childhood.

1st entry..

I create this blog so i can list down the things i can do to help Danish learn before he's going to preschool. For me he should go to school when he's 6yo. He's now 4. Papa wants him to go to school, so he gets stimulation. As I am just 1 half, i should listen to him. He's the dad, and he is actually more often right than me.

So, i've been scouting around for kindies in our area.. We want an islamic ones. Found a few: Genius Au*lad, PASTI, CIC.

Genius A*ulad: Located near Maybank Bandar Puteri (quite a distance there to drive him everyday), it's on the top floor of the shoplot. I'm a bit wary about the conduciveness, when you are so confined in a building like that. I think the fee is quite expensive too. From photos, i really don't like the ambience. But they said i can come next week and see their classes in progress. The classes are done twice daily, you can choose 8.30-11.30 am or 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

PASTI: stands for Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam. I think they have 10 branches just in Puchong itself. The nearest to us is Puchong Utama (PASTI AS Syifaa). This one is a kindie in residential area. ie. it's done in a house.. just as many kindies these days are. I don't like this one too, because of this. But i've got to go and see it for myself..

CIC: Childre*n Is*lamic Cen*tre. This one disappointed me.. I thought it's a big school, but it's the same.. in a house kindie. From the photos, it looked too crowded. It's quite expensive too.. And it's a franchise again. Compared to As SYifaa, i like As Syifaa better.

In fact there is an islamic preschool nearer to my house. But that one really have a bad connotation to Danish. SO i dare not send him there. That preschool is so near his previous nursery. He hated the nursery, just by going there makes him anxious. I don't want to go back there. It would just strengthen his fear of school.
